Sega chose Mega Drive Mini 2, because Dreamcast or Saturn Mini would be too expensive

Sega launched the Mega Drive Mini 2 this week. It is a mini-game that combines 50 classic games. Many people waited for a Dreamcast and Saturn re-release, but were disappointed. Yosuke Okunari explained why this was made.

Okunari spoke with Famish and explained that Sega had considered making the Saturn and Dreamcast Mini but ultimately decided to go for the mega Drive due to the costs and difficulties of Covid and subsequent semiconductor crisis.

Sega has not explored the idea of creating a Satu and Dreamcast Mini, but the Mega Drive Mini cannot run Saturn games. Okunari explained that a simple and costly process, based on the difficulties associated with the above problems, is making a new and improved chipset. Jokingly, a Saturn or Dreamcast mini will be as expensive as a modern console.

Okunari stated that the team was also searching for a Game Gear Micro. However, even now, the cost to produce the components could have resulted in a 50% increase in the selling price of the model.

Sega selected the GAM M30 for these reasons. Okunari stated that the GAM M30 was an extension of the previous package, and required a more complicated manufacturing process.

Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 will be available for $75 starting October 27, 2022 in Japan. The western launch date of the console is not yet confirmed.
