Doom is finally getting skeletal models and ragdolls

Doom mods and the GZDoom community have made it possible for the FPS classic to finally feature proper skeletal animation, and perhaps even ragdolls.

Doom mods continues to make some amazing add-ons to id Software’s FPS. These include ray tracing to proper support. The GZDoom community seems to be working on proper animation of the skeletal model – something that even Quake does not have. This could lead to head tracking and even ragdoll deaths animations. All of it was in 1993’s Doom.

Doom’s animations are very basic, and that’s part its charm. However, the GZDoom modding group is currently working to add the InterQuake model format (IQM), to allow modders to access better enemy and character animations.

GZDoom developer Nash Muhandes has pointed out that Shiny Metagross, dpJudas and other creators have finally managed to get these IQM models running in Doom. Modders will be able to access scripts that allow for bone manipulation functions such as head tracking, individual movement and even ragdoll animation.

If all goes according to plan, the next wave Doom mods could be constructed with modern animation techniques for enemies and characters. It could be very exciting and we cannot wait to see this Ninja Gaiden-like Mod take advantage of it.

It’s getting hard to distinguish between GZDoom’s creations and those made by others, considering how amazing they are.
