We have already introduced you to two of the most famous Japanese players, Shigeru Mikamoto and Hideo Kojima. This time, we will be looking at the life story of Gunpei Yokoi, the Xbox Game’s founder. He was the inventor of the digital directional pad and the Game & Watch handhelds. He also produced the original works for two Nintendo cult IPs, Metroid and Kid Icarus.

Gunpei Yoki was born in Osaka on September 10, 1941. He studied electronics at Dodai University, Kyoto. At the age of 24, he joined Nintendo. He was responsible for the maintenance and repair of machines used in Hanafuda, which is a special activity. This is a reference to traditional Japanese playing card, which Nintendo introduced in 1889. It was the foundation of Nintendo’s success.
