Your Character In Starfield Will Not Have a Voice

Starfield was given the spotlight by Bethesda, Xbox and Microsoft during its weekend showcase . This showcase featured more than 15 minute of new footage and information by Todd Howard.

Although the studio did not mention it during the showcase, shortly afterwards, Bethesda Game Studios’ Twitter account provided some additional details about Starfield dialogue and how your character, the protagonist, interacts with NPCs. Your character will not speak to NPCs because they don’t have voices.

The tweet below shows that the studio has clarified any confusion about the character created for Starfield. Some have praised the reveal while others have criticized it. Some Bethesda fans prefer RPGs that allow you to remain silent while others prefer their characters to be able speak in-game.

Both are fine with me. Starfield’s dialogue will be more Fallout 3-like than Fallout 4. The former would show you all the dialogue that your choice would produce, while Fallout 4’s choices were more like mood choices, which only gave you a broad view of each choice’s dialogue. Starfield may be able to restore some of my character’s agency. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future.

Starfield will be available on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One in 2023.
