September’s Xbox Live Games with Gold titles have been announced

The person who created SNK’s biggest fighting franchises claims there’s an interest in “all the sides” in the revival of the cult classic SNK Vs. Capcom series.

The well-known crossover game, which pairs the characters of The King of Fighters duke with the familiar Street Fighter combatants, hasn’t had an actual installment since 2003, due in part to SNK’s bankruptcy in the early 2000s and its shift into pachislots machines.

Capcom released two console and arcade fighting games that were based on its original genre rivals 2001 and 2000 in 2001 and 2000, while SNK launched portable titles and card game spin-offs, and an arcade game in the same time frame.

In an interview with VGC, Yauyuki Oda, the designer and producer who has led SNK’s fighting game revival in recent times (he was the director of King of Fighters 16 and created Samurai Showdown, plus this year’s KoF XV), has recently suggested that a brand new installment within the series’ crossover could eventually be possible.

Oda mentioned promotional posters that were collaboratively presented at the 2022 Evo fighting game tournament featuring artwork that came from the both SNK as well as Capcom games. It’s no surprise that the retro merch was well-received by fans. Oda stated to VGC that it “confirmed” the huge interest of the public in a possible SNK and. Capcom revival.

If he was interested in developing a brand new SNK against. Capcom game, Oda stated: “Definitely in the future, this is something that I believe everyone on both sides, from both sides, is interested in seeing become an actuality.

Evo posters

“Especially after we saw the reaction to the [Evo posters ]… it helped us reconfirm that that is probably one of the most wanted things from the fighting game community across the entire world.”

If asked about particular plans in place, Oda replied: “We haven’t had a lot of discussions with anyone at Capcom regarding the matter. It could have been an unintentional suggestion. But, we do have plenty of experience in crossovers including Akuma as well as Geese within Tekken, Terry [Bogard] in Fighting EX Layer, Terry in Smash Bros., and Baiken in Samurai Showdown…

“But recently, we haven’t actually done anything with Capcom, even on character collaboration stuff. So that poster [at Evo], in our sense, was the first step towards maybe something like that happening in the future.”

When asked if the fans would be waiting for another 20 years before seeing an all-new SNK against. Capcom game becomes reality Oda-san replied: “20 years is definitely too long for me. We’ll try and get it done in 10!”

While Oda stated that no serious talks took place, however, there are a few hints from Capcom’s end suggesting there is interest in a possible collaboration that has been spotted. The year before, Capcom was at war. SNK 2 director Hideaki Itsuno stated to Polygon that he was going to “love” to someday create an additional game.

Itsuno is, however, Itsuno is currently occupied with the Devil May Cry series and the forthcoming Dragon’s Dogma 2.

“I actually have two ideas for one-on-one fighting games still lingering in my mind,” he told me when he was in his early 20s. “It’s more of just a matter of having the opportunity to do so, so if there’s anyone that’s willing to give me a development team and a nice budget, I’m more than willing to listen.”

A UNIQUE GENRE

SNK’s Oda is a long-time employee of SNK and has been involved in the design of Fatal Fury Special (1993) and the King of Fighters 1995 (1995) as well as Garou: Mark of the Wolves (2000). Following the company’s bankruptcy as well as acquisition Oda became a part of Dimps where they actually worked on Capcom games, including Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter X Tekken.

After returning to SNK about 10 years since his departure, Oda has spearheaded many of the company’s most recent fighting games, such as directing The King of Fighters XIV (2016) as well as making SNK Heroines (2018), Samurai Showdown (2019) and King of Fighters XV (2022).

As a veteran of many of Japan’s top fighting game franchises, Oda is well positioned to talk about the genre and its unique collaborative atmosphere between rival creators.

“We have a really good relationship with [other fighting game companies],” the director said to VGC. “We meet very often and have dinner together. A lot of the time, it’s not [about] very specific things, but we do talk about the community and the genre in general.”

“There are other genres where you would have a lot of butting heads between IPs and such, but there’s more overlap in the FGC I would say and everyone is happy when a new game comes out.”

He also said: “A lot of the decisions are not taken in the hands of the game’s developers but rather by Marketing teams. However, to some extent, even without internal information We know it is the case that Street Fighter 6 is the hottest thing at the moment and if we decide to go to battle with them, everyone will be outnumbered.

“Especially for things like Evo and Evo, even when there are many game communities that are collaborating, we’re very friendly with each other, and there’s plenty of overlap. We’re just thinking that we would like to strengthen that and make it more a reality.

“It’s a genre that is unique in this sense I’d suggest. Other genres in which you will find a lot of fighting between IPs and other things however there is more overlap within the FGC I’d say, and also the eve
